Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
